[i]boygirlparty: snork

IMG_0072.JPG @ 50% (RGB/8*)so i finished that etgar keret book, and two more of the narnia books, and now i've started "animal, vegetable, miracle" inspired by having seen the documentary "food, inc" earlier this afternoon. i love having a bookshelf of unread books so my reading choices can meander around organically like this.

yesterday we went snorkeling again, this time at la jolla shores, and saw at least 300 leopard sharks and guitarfish. it's a strange thing, floating in water only a few feet deep with sharks swimming freely under you, more than you can count, until you feel positively surrounded. and when the waves push you closer to them, even though you know they're harmless, your heart skips a beat. it's a thrill.

did you know you can get seasick snorkeling? i found out the hard way!
that said, i hope i can build up my sea tolerance so i can go on long swims in the ocean before summer's over. born & raised a midwesterner, salty water with living things in it bigger than i am still freaks me out.

Finally here's the first bit of the latest Action Scene. Having some fun with big sweeping motions and fire. It's wordless so it reads quick, so I have been FORCED to give you FOUR pages instead of three. I've never really liked putting snappy bits of dialogue into violent bits, as seems to be kind of the industry standard. This stuff feels heavier and more believable if it's quiet, I think. Drawing drawing drawing.

I plan to start up an email list in the near future, if I can figure out how. I know a lot of people don't follow every update of OoT, so it might make sense to alert everybody when a chapter has been finished, or something like that. It's very important to me that everybody at least reads it once it's finished.

July 3rd, 2009: Dear Drew Mokris,

I am told that a few days ago you had a "pacifist" pun on your site, which coincides with the one I've got on mine! You say on your site that I borrowed one of your jokes, and then you go on to say that now YOU look like a time-travelling joke stealer, since my comic was posted after yours. Finally you admit that you stole the joke from your girlfriend. WELL IT TURNS OUT THAT THE JOKE IS ACTUALLY ON YOU, DREW, as I as well can travel through time, and I have ALREADY set it up so that at some point in the future I go back in time, mess with some genetics, and arrange events so that I AM your girlfriend. The girlfriend that you are with, right now. That's me. I am now doubly-mad that you stole my joke but you are a good kisser so we are cool. It's good to have / to be having this off my chest now / in the future!!

Yours,
Ryan

PS drew i hope that if somehow our letters ends up on our sites it will be clear that we are both just joking!! :0

[i]drawn_ca: Abner Graboff

The Abelard Folk Song Book 04

Who was Abner Graboff? I had no idea. So, I decided to find out on my own.

The Sun Looks Down 5
Something For You Something For Me 3

Artist, illustrator & designer with a career that spanned several decades, from the 1940’s to the 80’s, Abner was best known for creating some of the most ingenious and vibrant children’s books during the mid-century era. But you’d never know it. There was practically nothing on the guy if you did a search online. It was frustrating for me, because I felt that his sense of construction and concepts when it came to designing children’s books was so fresh and bold. Surely there had to be something about the artist out there, right? Nope. Nothing. So I contacted his son, musician and producer Jon Graboff, and interviewed him about his father’s background, his influences, and overall career. The result of our conversations can be found on my blog in three posts:

Who was Abner Graboff?
The Art & Life of Abner Graboff Part 1
The Art & Life of Abner Graboff Part 2

Featuring scans from some of his kid’s books, cook book illustrations, jacket cover designs, as well as family photos. Jon’s been very cool in sharing with us his father’s fascinating life & career as an artist. A quote by Jon about his father says it all for me:

“He was artistically and intellectually curious by nature and he was always saying things like, I wonder why… I think that he believed that when you stop asking why, when, where, and what’s next… it’s all over.”

Who was Abner Graboff? Now, we can know.

I'll do this again come fall.

[i]drawn_ca: La Linea

Several years ago I linked to a site featuring over 50 episodes of Osvaldo Cavandoli’s wonderful series of short animations, La Linea. That link has come and gone, but I did just find an extensive YouTube playlist of 78 La Linea episodes.

I loved watching these as a kid. You may recognize La Linea’s voice as Carlo Bonomi, the voice of Pingu.

Æthirus knows something, but isn't telling, WHAT ELSE IS NEW. I'm trying to build up a buffer so I can go on vacation with my family in a coupla weeks without missing a beat here, so I'm afraid I can't give you any more pages than these meager and melodramatic three... though the next bit is AWESOME. Our ending point here, I realize, is a tad reminiscent of Æthirus' earlier treachery. Wow, matter of fact, that's exactly 200 pages earlier. There is some sort of synchronicity here.

Ordered those Huff shirts today, and should have them out and to all purchasers by the 20th of July on the outside. I think this has gone rather well; I want to do another shirt in the near future. I unfortunately lack capital to keep them in stock all the time, though.

I have sent my money for a table to the good people at APE, the Alternative Press Expo. It is in San Francisco in October, and I have every intention of being there. BYEBYE!

rubber_cement

Drawger has set up the Museum of Forgotten Art Supplies where “tools of the trade that have died or have just about died a slow slow death are cheerfully exhibited.”

I still have plenty of these kicking around from my school days — rubber cement pick-up, proportion wheel, dry cleaning pad, t-squares, triangles. I even use some of them still, despite having a heavily digital workflow. Heck, I’ve even used a plastic circle template on my Cintiq itself.

But please don’t make me set type by hand ever again.
